The Quiet Swing of Becoming

Some days, I climb—weathered heels, quiet resolve—

Not to rise above,

But to feel the wind among the trees,

To dwell in the view,

And feel small and grateful

Beneath a sky that forgets all names.

I’ve stumbled upward,

Found joy by mistake,

Failed with great effort.

Still, I lace my shoes again—

Not to arrive,

But to saunter like wind across embers,

Stirring life from quiet flame.

Other days, I stay close to the ground—

Watch a leaf turn in the wind,

Listen to the sparrow trace its threadless path.

The world moves on,

Because someone else is tending the fire.

Today, I sit beside the warmth.

Still, the sky finds me.

I let the fire tend the rice in its own time,

Let silence settle where questions used to burn.

The day asks nothing of me,

And I return the gift in kind.

I call it enough—

And mean it.

The world speaks in edges—

Win or lose,

Climb or fall,

Be this or that.

But life moves in quiet arcs—

A breath drawn in,

A breath released,

A rhythm without verdict.

Even the moon must lean into darkness

Before it begins to glow.

Even the sage, once,

Reached out a hand and asked the way.

To walk is sometimes to arrive.

To sit is also to move.

The path is neither ridge nor ladder—

It’s what soaks your feet

When you stop searching.

So I climb—

Not to rise above,

But to feel the ache of becoming,

To pour meaning gently

Into the cracks absurdity leaves behind.

To watch it seep away,

Still pour again, and believe it mattered.

To awe at peaks that were never owed.

Then rest awhile.

Then climb again.

Precious jewels in heaven!

Mirza Saab admiring Chinar leaves in Srinagar

These that wither and rustle,
These that sparkle and crumble,
These that are spread so bountiful,
These that are infinitely beautiful -
Mamma, are these leaves of Chinar,
What they call precious jewels?
And the land that nurtures them,
Is this what they call heaven?
For their fleeting company
Brings to me unbounded joy!
What else can be precious?
Where else can be heaven?

Virtues of Relationships?

Speak of Love! (PC: Myself!)

Those who preach
The virtues of relationships,
Mind a few subtleties that make
It worth the idea of companionship.
One is called 'choice',
Another is 'perspective',
Few more are called
'Expectations', 'mutual respect',
'Evolving values' and 'contingent truths'.
Only after thou appreciate these,
Do dare to speak of 'Love'!

The wild flower

PC: Myself!!

This is an attempted translation of a Kannada poem. The original penned by the philosopher-poet D V Gundappa is titled "vana suma" (literally 'forest flower'). A prayer seeking more humility!

Oh Lord...
Master, refine my soul so
That my life too may evolve
As that of the "wild flower"!

Like the jasmine in the forest
That blooms in silence,
Spreads true fragrance in joy;
Blooming behind the leaves
Being in all humility,
Abandoning pride,
As it attains fulfillment.

Oh Lord...
Master, refine my soul so
That my life too may evolve
As that of the "wild flower"!

"Benefactor am I and
My benefaction to the world"
Saved from such
Perverted thought;
Let me live in genuine grace
Like that of a tree that provides
Abundant shade, good fruits
And fragrant flowers.

Oh Lord...
Master, refine my soul so
That my life too may evolve
As that of the "wild flower"!

 The original (In Kannada) -

Ramblings of an Outcast

Painting by Sir Peter Paul Rubens

(Whatever I wish to say,
By my words, destroyed are they!)
                        - Irshaad Kamil(In the soul-stirring lyrics
                      for the movie 'Rockstar')

If at all you look at me,
Then look at me, as I am;
And not as I could have been
Or as you had wished me to be.

I am now, only what I am.
Neither what I once was.
Nor what I once maybe.
If I have changed, then so have I.
Changed when felt a need to.
What is wrong, if to me I heed to?

Spare the prejudices and preoccupations.
Dodge thy taught perception and comparison.
Deep in my eyes, don't you see your reflection?
I too am like you.
Haunted by guilt, Burdened by desires
            And driven by dreams.
Frustrated in pursuits, lost in victories
            And won in defeats.
In true love, only with myself.

Confess in solitude; Conceal in multitude.
Perfected by the imperfections of my attitude.
Flawed, the way we all are, but not faked.
Baked, the way life roasts us all, not exempted.
Is not this you?
Or is it still only me?

Well, I derive a unique pleasure
Common to the outcast genre!
Pleasure in the pride

Of dancing to my own tunes and rhymes!
Unfettered by the truth or vanity of these dreams,
I live, in ecstasy - as if flowing through life's streams.

When death knocks my door
I wish I die a mad dog's death.
One I have dreamed and craved often for.
As I lay in my death -
If at all you look at me,
Then look at me, as I am;
And not as I could have been
Or as you had wished me to be.

Kittens in Akhanda Bharat!

 The kitten at my home
Whom I consider my daughter
Suffers from a unique fever
I know not what is the cure
Nor do I have an answer.

We have chosen a family doctor
Who claims to know the cure
He always has all the answers.
My mother is a skeptic, they say.
She lets the kitten endure suffering.

After days of disagreement
Mom is thrown out of home
Locking up Dad in forced slumber
The doctor stealthly administers
What he claims will work wonder.

We all knew the kitten was born
Under circumstances so terrible
That it inherited the unique fever
Vainly treated by vets from all over
Yet we pin our hopes on this doctor.

The kitten is forcibly tied up tight
How to treat if it puts up a fight?
And lo behold, what is the medicine?
To deprive it of all the accommodation
Done to put up with the uniqueness.

Should I celebrate the experiment?
Is this how I treat my daughter?
Or do I let it be as it is a mere kitten?
Am I sure someday the doctor will not
Treat me with one of his wonders?

Well, my name is Akhanda Bharat
I have usually been a mute spectator.
Though I do not have all the answers
I trust in the reputation of the doctor
For he protects holy cow from slaughter.

(Oh life,
Is it that you have
truly remained silent?
Or
Have we interpreted your
natural indifference as silence?

Oh life,
Is it that we have made you
the metaphor for all our fictions?
Or
Have we unknowingly
remained pawns in your game?

Oh life,
Is it that we made our
choices when it suited us best?
Or
Have we blamed you and
consequently justified our choices?

Oh life,
Is it that you are the
inevitability of bearing pain?
Or
Have we been blinded to the
diverse set of varied feelings?)

The Nature of Knowledge!

Naively schooled in Science,
           Me thought only reason
                And logic led to knowledge!

Traversing the terrains of life,
Me realize it isn't so simple.
Knowledge may always be partial & plural!

It may not be the pursued holy grail
But this very land that we have been living on
And beyond, where we may never live on!

Myths and fiction, Instincts and intuition,
Rhetoric and religion, Experience and expression,
Science and reason, Scripture and superstition,
Ambiguity and tradition, Poetry and reflection -
Are all but different paths, at times
                  Seemingly contradictory multitudes,
Traversing on which we can only hope
To grapple the vast landscape of knowledge!

PS: Years ago, I held reason and logic as my Gods, instinct and intuition my angels and placed my ultimate faith in humanity (Full poem where I expressed that sentiment - https://anamkal.blogspot.com/2015/01/faith-in-humanity.html). I do not perceive reason and logic with that universal position of pride anymore. Maybe, I refuse to hold anything as God!

The sheep and the shepherd

PC: Myself!

Don't the sheep know for themselves
how to survive and thrive?
Or is the shepherd any better than those
who claim to herd humanity?

Life: An ocean of infinite absurdity?

Incurable sickness, interminable sadness.
Inconvenient truths, irresolvable entanglements.
Irreparable wounds, invincible fatalities.
Maybe, this is how life is, in the long shot -
A seemingly endless ocean of infinite absurdity!

Fleeting moments, transient happiness.
Bursts of passion, impulses of creativity.
Smiles that last seconds, laughter pains in jaws.
Love that drowns and rises, cries that drain.
Maybe, this is how life is, as one zooms in -
Drowning lively islands in an ocean of infinite absurdity!

Things we break, as we age!

Age that was, that is and that will be! (PC: Myself!)

There was an age
                       When I broke toys, bulbs,
And my own teeth and toes.

With time they
                           Either did not matter, got
                        Repaired or grew back!

This is an age
                             When I break trust, promises
And hearts - mine and theirs.

With time they
                    May give up, go numb
                      Or some may heal back!

Will there be an age
                             When I cannot break anything
                        But for my own illusions?

And with time they
                       Too might grow indifferent
And not bother to get back!

Corridors of spring

PC: Myself

In the corridors of spring
         Breeze kisses leaves
             Breaks the tender twigs
And they all fall in love!

The world springs to life
In the dance of the fall
In the melody of the breeze
In the poetry of the rustle!

As nature puts us to shame
What chance do we mortals have
But to admire, emulate and love
                                  With shattered pride, gathered humility!

Her hands and mine!

PC: Mrignayanee

In her hands, I learnt to
Make my way through the world.
In my hands, she trusts to
Explore what lies beyond her world!

Withering leaves of time

On withering leaves of time
Our futile efforts to sculpt our name!
Do we plead that we are naive
Or count it among our crime?

Chaos and calmness

Painting by Mrignaynee

I wonder if the only way
Is to embrace the chaos
And drown deep into it.

Trust the ocean to finally
Wash me off onto the
Shore of infinite calmness.

Only to realize later that the
Calmness is not of the shore,
But of the scars chaos forged.

Colourblind in a black and white world!

Dhriti, around her second birthday

In a world of
Black and white
I was afraid if I was
Colourblind, for
All that I saw was
Shades of grey.

With you coming
Into the world, I
Cherish my blindness;
As you flood me
In an ocean of
Infinite colours!

(I keep flying,
I know not to where.
Sometimes I wonder
If I am flying just because I can,
And if the seeking ceases when the question does!)

The fire

There is a fire deep inside my heart -
A fire that heals me though it burns me.
As you walked in, I hoped it would douse,
Only to realize, healing entailed burning to ashes!

Late night, long talks.

I miss those late night long talks.
Sometimes boys, sometimes girls.
But we were in those times, close friends.
Thoughts on the world and ourselves,
Flirting with taboos, woes, ideas, dreams.
Non-judgmental, as if lying naked,
Raw and true, sharing what the heart felt.
As if only over those calls we made love,
Unabashed, uninhibited, uncertain, aimless.
All over the place, random like natural energy;
Those talks were like beautiful entropy.

I am afraid, dead are those days.
We have got old and fallen into patterns?
Organised, uniform, well directed we talk.
Like we wake up, we behave and we work.
Like we learn, we earn and we burn.
Like we like, we tweet and we share.
Like we diagnose, we test and we treat.
Like we buy, we sell and we play.
Like we swipe, we flirt and we seduce.
Like we call, we chat and we mail.
But, I feel it has been long since I talked.
I miss those late night long talks.
